Tues May 17h: Wine Special of the Day
by RWS Staff on 05/06/11
Remember that famous line from the movie "Sideways" about "hating f&***^ merlot"? Well, we all know the effect that had on Pinot Noir sales, and as a lover of Pinot, I myself have been guilty of not giving the merlot grape its fair due. But let's think about it for a moment. What's really not to like about merlot? After all, there are few if any more supple wines than merlot. It can be easy drinking, almost silky at times. At it's best, it can hold it's own against any hearty meal, yet doesn't usually require food to be enjoyable. After all, probably the most famous and expensive wine on the planet, believe it or not, is almost all merlot--Chateau Petrus from Pomerol in Bordeaux, which if you can get your hands on some, will cost you about $5000 a bottle!
Fortunately, we've got a better deal....
2006 Clos Du Val Merlot (Regularly $26) This week only! $16.99 Here's what Robert Parker has to say:
86 points. "The 2006 Merlot (at $26), fairly priced, is a blend of 77% merlot, 16% Cabernet, and the rest Cabernet Franc. Its dary ruby color is accompanied by notes of mocha, cocoa, chocolate, berries, and a touch of herbs. Consume this medium-bodied Merlot over the next 7-10 years.
